Description
As the boundaries between motion picture and television workflows blur, the demand for advanced formats with superior dynamic range and color gamut, such as non-broadcast Large Color Volume (LCV) formats, strains traditional broadcast workflows. Unlike display-referred formats, advanced LCV formats require complex color-managed workflows, often involving manual post-production by a colorist, which adds time and cost. Key challenges include quality control, asset lifecycle management, and proper format identification, with issues such as desaturation, banding artifacts, and exposure inconsistencies complicating broadcast integration. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has addressed these challenges by developing innovative methods for managing LCV formats like Slog3/SGamut3. This includes automating gamut and exposure validation, format conversion, and post-production workflows, as well as implementing direct broadcast integration and archival methods. This paper details the new QC methods, automated workflows, and training programs designed to ensure optimal image quality, cost-effective workflows, and compatibility with both current and future broadcast standards.
