SMPTE is doing two important updates and additions to the ST 2059 family of standards. The 1st is updates to the ST 2059-2 profile required because of changes in IEEE 1588. IEEE 1588:2019 (v2.1) tried to be backwards compatible with IEEE 1588:2008 (v2). Unfortunately, some of the changes have made the SMPTE ST 2059-2:2021 profile not compatible with IEEE 1588:2019. This presentation will discuss the v2.1 changes that are not compatible with ST 2059-2 and the changes SMPTE is making to ST 2059-2 to make it compliant with v2.1.
The second change is the addition of common industry best practices. The ST 2059 standards allow flexibility in design and implementation. However, this flexibility is not required for most implementations. Some vendors have what they claim are the “best practices”. Unfortunately, some of these are not compatible and these different best practices cause confusion in the industry. To resolve this, SMPTE is developing a broadcast industry wide common best practices document called RP 2059-14. The key points in this RP will be covered.
There are ways that you can contribute to the success of the updates. These include providing feedback via the Public Committee Draft (PCD) process and participating in a PTP workshop SMPTE is considering to assist vendors in testing the updated ST 2059-2 profile and users in deploying mixed 2019 and 2008 systems.
