Description

Film grain is crucial to the artistic vision of video sequences but poses a significant challenge for video encoders, often requiring either high bitrates to preserve the grain or its removal to achieve lower bitrates. Film grain synthesis (FGS) addresses this by recreating grain during decoding, allowing for efficient delivery of near-grain-free video while preserving artistic intent. The prevalent technology, AFGS1, is integrated into AV1 decoders and has been extended to HEVC decoders, with potential future applications in VVC. Despite its benefits, deploying FGS involves challenges, including the need for simulcasting to support legacy devices, which can increase CPU usage and data traffic. This paper examines practical deployment aspects of FGS for both file and live delivery, focusing on optimizing delivery for mixed environments of legacy and FGS-enabled clients. It evaluates the impact of various “degraining” levels, encoding methods, and distribution strategies on perceived quality, resources, and data traffic, aiming to provide guidance for effectively integrating FGS into existing systems.
