Charles Robinson, Principle Member, Sound Tech Research at Dolby Laboratories, received BSEE and MSEE degrees from the University of Illinois, where he specialized in audio signal processing. He began his professional career just as real-time digital audio signal processing was becoming a practical reality. Since joining Dolby Research in 1995 areas of research have included, acoustics, audio coding, loudness, interactive audio and spatial audio with applications to broadcast, gaming, cinema, and live sound. Charles has authored or coauthored over a dozen patents in audio signal processing, and has been recognized with multiple Emmy awards and by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and is a member of AES and IEEE, and SMPTE Fellow.
As audio research lead for spatial audio Charles Robinson was responsible for the conception of the Dolby Atmos audio format and sound system design. Current work includes adapting Dolby Atmos for application to large venue live events.
