Student Paper Award

The Student Paper Award recognizes an outstanding paper prepared and submitted by a Student Member. The paper receiving the Student Paper Award will be published in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal and identified as the award-winning paper, giving recognition to the author and the institution at which the work was done.

The Student Paper Award is presented to Ms. Lopez for her paper, "Camera Tracking Systems and their Democratisation."

Irene is a recent graduate in Film production and Broadcast Engineering driven by a profound love for creativity and an enjoyment of technical challenges. Blending these two areas she discovered an interest for Virtual Production, and dedicated her Technical Project to investigate the Camera Tracking Techniques that are used in this process. In 2022-2023, she honed her storytelling skills with an internship at the Walt Disney Company as a Creative Producer for National Geographic. In her final year at the University of Surrey, she was able to showcase her abilities by producing the original short film UNCANCELLED and directing the multi-cam live show Univision Song Contest 2024. She has also been an active member of the award-winning student TV station for StagTV since her first year at Surrey, and was president of the society during her second and fourth year at university. Through StagTV, she also directed Univision 2023 which won Gold for Best Live Broadcast, and the Univision 2024 Heats awarded her a Silver for Best Directing at the NASTA ceremony 2024. She is currently working as an MSO with Vivid Broadcast, with whom she’s worked in events including Big Church Festival 2024.
