This session explores the evolving relationship between AI policy and standards development. It outlines the broad spectrum of AI-related policies, from ethical and regulatory considerations to operational and governance frameworks. International standards organizations are currently focused on horizontal, management-level standards that apply across sectors and technologies.

SMPTE, by contrast, has traditionally developed vertical standards tailored to specific media technologies and workflows. The session will examine how SMPTE’s work can align with or complement broader policy-driven initiatives, and identify areas within the policy spectrum where its expertise may contribute meaningfully to the development of AI-related standards.
