Tom is an engineer at BBC Research and Development, working on media formats, content delivery and automation with teams across the BBC and groups such as SMPTE and the EBU. He has worked extensively on preserving the BBC's historic television archive and ensuring the quality and compliance of new content through the design and adoption of MXF and IMF delivery specifications for SD, HD and UHD. Through collaborations with the AMWA and DPP his work established AS-11 compliance and certification activities on behalf of UK broadcasters and manufacturers, enabling the milestone transition from videotapes in 2014. Within SMPTE he has transformed and operated the technical metadata systems that underpin numerous SMPTE standards such as MXF and IMF, and chaired groups publishing extensions to IMF for advanced audio and data applications. He currently works on the design and adoption of data-driven, software-based media supply chains using BBC R&D's Time-Addressable Media principles.
