This presentation gives an in-depth overview about a fully redundant SDN orchestration solution which was deployed for a large network and service provider in Italy to support the roll-out of DVB-T2 in the country. Together with the infrastructure renewal and as part of a wider digital transformation program a full-IP Software Defined Media Network was built.
The SDN orchestration solution runs on top and supports a mix of compressed and uncompressed ST2110 and ST2022-6 signals which are routed across four locations in Italy where each site has its own spine-leaf network. Quad-redundant signals are routed via a red and blue network where one network is based on Arista, the other one on Cisco infrastructure. Some parts of the network are non-blocking, some other parts are blocking. The orchestrator calculates and configures the most efficient path in the network for each media flow to ensure that no link can be oversubscribed at any point in time. Moreover, the solution not only allows ad-hoc switching, but also comes with the possibility to reserve bandwidth for different signal types with different bandwidth requirements in the future to ensure that sufficient bandwidth will be available on each link.
Another part of the presentation will cover the automated and secure onboarding of the inventory. The solution scans the network, detects the switches and media edge devices and how they are connected, and applies the correct initial configuration which also includes applying multicast-IPs from a pool of IP-addresses. There is no need to manually insert the network topology into the SDN controller.
The last part will focus on operations: the system can be controlled from different locations and provides dedicated user interfaces to schedule connections upfront or to route signals ad-hoc in the MCRs. To achieve full observability, fault and performance management was of key importance, this includes monitoring all infrastructure, the video and audio flows including all PTP nodes.
