Tim Borer has worked in video, image, signal processing, networking and, most recently, holographic light field displays. He has worked for many years in research and development, in the broadcast, film and media industry. He currently works on low latency video codec design (as well as on light field displays). He was a major contributor, whilst working for BBC R&D, to the SMPTE VC-2 compression standard. He has worked on high dynamic range video, being a major contributor to the BBC/NHK Hybrid Log-Gamma HDR (HLG) format and to the ITU-R BT.2020 UHDTV standard. Tim holds degrees in video processing, electronics and physics. He is a Chartered Engineer (a Member of the UK Institute of Engineering and Technology), a Senior member of the IEEE, and a Fellow of the SMPTE. In 2018 he was awarded the 2018 SMPTE Digital Processing Medal “for outstanding achievement”, and was awarded the best paper (on high dynamic range video, HDR) at the 2015 International Broadcasting Convention. He is the author of about two dozen journal and conference papers, mainly on video, and is the inventor of a score of patents.
