Honoree Citation
SMPTE awards the 2022 Workflow Systems Medal to the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES), in recognition of its significant creative and technical impact, enabling consistent, high-quality color management across complex, collaborative, end-to-end workflows. ACES was developed by hundreds of the industry’s top scientists, engineers, and end users, working together under the auspices of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Science and Technology Council, through years of research, testing, and field trials. ACES is a free, open, device-independent color management and image interchange system that can be applied to almost any current or future workflow and has now become the industry standard for managing color throughout the lifecycle of a motion picture or television production.
