Enhancing Visual Fidelity in Media Production
Session Room 1
Film grain is essential to analogue cinema's aesthetic but challenges video compression by losing authenticity in low-bitrate scenarios. AV1 film grain synthesis technology improves this by estimating and reconstructing grain during decoding. However, block size selection affects reconstruction quality, with larger blocks potentially introducing noticeable noise. We propose a perceptual quality assessment method that leverages the human visual system to detect and penalize repetitive noise patterns by comparing decoded frames to grain templates. This approach efficiently processes high-resolution videos, showing strong correlation with expert judgments.
